A Quest for Fitness

My Fitness Level
I was a busy little beaver, growing up with extracurricular activities left and right. From various sports, fitness club memberships to music and arts, my parents made sure that I am exposed to all kinds of stimuli that would bring out the best in me. I was raised to believe that great athletes are made not born, an adage printed on our high school swimming team shirt.

Falling at the Hurdle
My fitness journey suddenly hit rock bottom when I was in medical school. Faced with everyday stress, my body depended on caffeine and nicotine every time I flipped the pages of my books during the wee hours. Unhealthy lifestyle suddenly enveloped the previously fit habits. I became obese at one fell swoop. These circumstances became a turning point for me to regain fitness before it continues to take a toll on my body.

Getting Back on Track
Ardently devoted to the gym, I was able to get back on track by leaps and bounds. I jumped on the treadmill, did some stationary cycling, watched my food intake and converted into a gym rat. I plateaued. I
got a personal trainer and did the typical workout which consisted of isolation movements and aerobic sessions. I had my share of lateral raises, bicep curls, leg and triceps extensions. I strictly adhered to a
program that most of exercising public followed, that is, chest, biceps on certain days alternating with back muscles and legs on other days. I plateaued. My relentless quest for an ideal workout regimen did not stop there.

My CrossFit Experience
I was introduced to CrossFit about 2 years ago. I must admit that my first days in CrossFit came as a jolt from the blue because of the intensity of the workouts. The movements are compound and varied including Olympic lifts (weightlifting), gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning (cardiovascular workouts). The movements are functional and involve multiple joints for every activity. The coaches are professionally trained to handle athletes and cater to their individual needs. The fitness program is about safety, efficacy and efficiency. CrossFit’s methodology is evidence-based, tested and most
importantly, community developed.

Becoming an athlete was not my goal when I joined CrossFit. I came here to be fit and healthy. My training proved to be one of the most meaningful journeys of my life. I have developed a disciplined mentality, always striving to beat myself in every day training. CrossFit has given me much more than what I wanted. It has given me a family. For that, I will be forever thankful.
